Leisel Meminger's life has been turned upside down. Her mother leaves her with foster parents and her younger brother has died. While at the funeral, she finds the grave digger's handbook, her first act of book theivary. From then on, Leisal starts stealing books from Nazi book burnings, the mayors wife's library, wherever books are to be found.
